The scientific name of finger millet is Eleusine Coracana, it belongs to the family Poaceae. It is an annual herbaceous plant that is grown widely as a cereal crop in the arid and semi-arid regions.  This crop is widely grown as a primary crop in some areas of Asia and Africa. It is originated in East Africa and it is native to the Ethiopia and Uganda regions.

The carbohydrate content is very high which is about 80% and the dietary fiber is about 15 – 20%.  The protein content is very close to the wheat and one best part is that it is nonallergic as many are allergic to the protein of wheat.  Now let us know the nutritive value of the grain per 100 g, carbohydrate 72 g, Protein 7.3 g, fat 1.3 g, minerals 2.7 g.  The most significant and unique property which makes finger millet a super grain is that it is very rich in calcium and also potassium, calcium is about 344 mg and potassium is 408 mg.  The fiber content is 3.6 g and energy 328 kcal.  The finger millet has low-fat content which is 1.3% and about 100 g of unsaturated fat which is very good.  The finger millet is also packed with some of the traces of vital micro-nutrient like manganese, phosphorus, iron, niacin, thiamine, riboflavin as well as useful amounts of copper, and optimal levels of magnesium, chromium, molybdenum, zinc, and selenium.  The finger millet is possessed with phytates (0.48%), polyphenols, tannins (0.61%), trypsin, etc.  The finger millet is also composed of a good number of essential amino acids which are very essential for the proper metabolism of the human body.  Here are some of the key essential amino acids which are tryptophan, threonine, valine, isoleucine, and methionine
