The kodo millet is scientifically known as Paspalum scrobiculatum and it has many regional names like Himalayan milletvaragu, kodo, haraka and arikelu. Kodo millet is an indigenous and primary crop of India and at present considering the demand on Millets, these became very significant crop and it is grown widely across north India and south India. We can also see kodo millet originates across the world where they grow the kodo millet as minor crop in some countries like Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand and West Africa. Kodo millet is a perennial grass like crop which grows across the tropical and subtropical regions of the world.

Before knowing much about the kodo millet, i would like to thank Dr. Khadar vali personally and behalf of every one who are pursuing all his ideas, in fact we all are indebted for his enduring and committed efforts for past twenty odd years on our indigenous food which our old generations consumed. The entire world is running after the modernization and eating the food which is equal to poison. The food we eat is more of chemicals and less of nutritive value as every food is owned to hybridization and hence the usage of the poisonous chemical fertilizers and pesticides has increased and these all are the main cause of all modern diseases. Dr. Khadar vali who is the expert of health and food claims that one can cure all type of diseases by consuming siridhanyalu. Actually their is an ancient saying that food is the medicine and mother nature gifted us everything and we are not utilizing the nature properly. so, its high time to go back to nature and lead a fruitful life by consuming siridhanyalu.

The kodo millet is a grass which grows to a length of about one meter and the color of the grain varies from pinkish red, light brown to dark grey. The shape of the seed is ellipsoidal and it is very small. Every part of the crop like seed, leaves, root, stem, rhizome is edible, useful and have medicinal properties. The taste of kodo millet is sweet, bitter and astringent.


It has good protein content (11%), low in fat (4.2%), very high in fiber(14.3%), gluten free and it contains high amount of lecithin which play a significant role in treating the nerve disorders. It is rich in antioxidants, vitamins like B’s especially niacin, B6 and folic acid and contain huge amount of minerals like magnesium, calcium, iron, potassium and zinc. And it also contains phytochemicals like campesterol which helps to reduce the cholesterol levels and hence reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It also contains cysteine, ferulic acid, folic acid, alkaline hydrocarbons like hentriacontane, phenolic acid, phenolics, quercetin, saponins, syringic acid, tannins and vanillic acid.


It is a nutritious food and a good substitute for rice and wheat. It can also used to make roti, pudding in India by powdering them into flour.

It is also used as animal fodder for cattle, goats, pigs, sheep and poultry.

It is popularly known as famine, fast or upvas food in some parts of India. The nutritive value of the kodo millet is very high which is gluten free and also rich in antioxidants, minerals and vitamins, hence it is more potential to provide the good nourishment to the farmers.

It can be grown in stony soil like hill areas and the people who live in such areas take kodo millet as their staple food and they stay healthy and live long.

It is also grown as cover crop to enhance the fertility of the soil and to prevent the soil erosion.



The regular consumption of kodo millet helps to cure the risk of diabetes, as it contains lot of anti diabetic compounds like quercertin, ferulic acid, hydrobenzoic acid, vanillic acid and syringic acid. All these compounds play a very significant role in promoting the serum insulin levels.  Kodo millet also helps to cure the acute diabetic patients with wounds and injuries leading to gangrene.


The rich source of antioxidants and helps to remove the toxins from the body. It also contain polyphenols which helps to fight aganist certain bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus, Leuconostoc mesenteroides, Bacillus cereus and Enterococcus faecalis. The anti microbial activity property helps to cure asthma, boosting the efficiency of bone marrow, fighting against various cancers like kidney, prostate, blood, intestinal, thyroid, throat, pancreatic gland and liver.


It is widely used to reduce the weight as it contain the balanced amount of the dietary fiber which makes them very special.  It contains a very rich source of fiber which helps in easy bowel movement, hence making the digestive system toxic free and healthy. It also helps to remove all the gas problem, indigestion and bloating of stomach by cleansing the intestines regularly. Kodo millet has the hydrating property which helps to hydrate the colon and keep the system hydrated and free from constipated.


It contain high amount of lecithin, which helps to treat all nerve disorders and also memory disorders like Alzheimer and dementia problems. The regular consumption of kodo millet also helps to cure Parkinson’s disease by strengthening the nervous system.

The kodo millet plays a vital role in the weight loss hence regulates the hormonal imbalance and prevent the menstrual disorders and postmenopausal problems.


The kodo millet is the rich source of antioxidants, photo chemicals and lecithin, all these factors significantly promotes in the cleansing of blood.  The consumption of kodo millet helps in purifying the blood for those people who become weak after getting affected by viral fevers like dengue, typhoid etc. and it also helps in eliminating all the toxins from the blood when the person recovers after the consumption of poison, if such person take this kodo millet continuously for 3 weeks in the form of liquid the total system get cleanses. Kodo millet contain the phytosterol known as campesterol, these molecules will compete with cholesterol and reduces the absorption of cholesterol in the intestines, hence it helps reducing the risk of blood pressure and high cholesterol levels. The demand for the millet is increasing drastically, hence the production is not able to reach the level of demand. So, many are exploiting this situation and adding short grain rice to the millet which resemble the grain of the millet. So, it is not that easy to identify without the proper knowledge on millet, hence one can identify the fake or pseudo quality of the millet just by knowing about the millet eye. Millet eye is the very mini small black dot which we can see on every grain of the millet. For example if you are going to buy one packet of millet which has millet eye on about 70 to 80% of the grains then we can consider the packet is with good quality grains.
